Gaia Online

Gaia Online is an English-language, anime-themed social networking and forums-based website. It was founded in 2003 as Go-Gaia.com, but the name was changed to GaiaOnline.com in 2004 by its owner, Gaia Interactive. Gaia originally began as an anime linklist and eventually developed a small community, but, following a statement by founder Derek Liu (username "Lanzer"), the website moved towards social gaming. It eventually became the forum-based website it is now. Today, over a million posts are made daily and it is visited by 7 million unique users each month. Gaia also won the 2007 Webware 100 award in the Community category. (Taken from Wikipedia)

Gaia Online is a mix of social networking and massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG). It is a Anime-themed forums website that is considered “the largest forum on the Internet,” with allegedly over one million posts being made each day. There are over 2.5 million users per month, consisting mainly of teenagers. Forum participants, known as Gaians, have an avatar which they can customize with a variety of items that can be purchased using Gaia Online’s virtual currency, known as Gaia Gold. Gaia Gold can be earned by playing Flash-based games (cards, fishing, word games, among others), posting on the forums, or simply by browsing the website. Avatars can hold items, be posed in multiple ways, and can wear different kinds of clothes. Other items for purchase include monthly collectibles and furniture for one’s Gaia Home. Like-minded folks who are interested in similar interests can create or join guilds, which can be public, private, or hidden.

Gaia Online was founded in 2003, and it has more than 300,000 active users daily. In addition to the games, Gaia Online also has active forums that are in part for fun, but also are an integral element to the plot and progression of Gaia Online's plotline. Since launch, the forums have been host to more than a billion member posts. (Taken from Cnet News)
